Takács Quartet
EDWARD DUSINBERRE
First violin of one of the great string quartets of our time, the Grammy Award-winning Takács Quartet, Edward Dusinberre felt his playing had evolved to the point where he needed a new bow. He had previously acquired an excellent Lupot bow from Bein & Fushi and he entrusted salesman Gabriel Ben-Dashan to assist him in his search: "Bein & Fushi provides great service and support for musicians. One makes a large financial commitment in acquiring an instrument or bow. And you do hope your playing evolves over time. You've already spent a lot, so what do you do? It's easy to get trapped. I spent the summer reworking my bowing and now needed something a little lighter, more flexible. Gabriel couldn't have been nicer. He really understood the issue for me. He found a Étienne Pajeot bow and was very flexible about taking the Lupot back." How is Dusinberre enjoying his new bow? "The Pajeot can do any-thing! This bow is ideally balanced and so versatile. I need a bow that can do a punch, but also filigree strokes." In addition to the Quartet's many engagements in United States and tours to Europe and Asia, this season's highlights include a continuing focus on education. In its second season as Associate Artists with London's South Bank Centre, the ensemble is working with high school students, most of whom have never heard a quartet before. And at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the ensemble has just completed its first residency, working with music students over three visits in the fall. The Takács' first CD on the Hyperion label featuring music by Schubert has been released to glowing reviews.
