A superb viola byNicolò AmatiCremona, 1677Length: 17 3/8thViolas by Nicolò Amati are rare and of the highest quality. His great-grandfather Andrea Amati was the inventor of the violin and also likely made the first viola. This instrument was slightly reduced in size, making it comfortable to play. The two-piece spruce top shows a variable width of grain from medium to broad. The one-piece slab-cut maple back is handsome. The varnish is of a golden brown color. Tonally it is sumptuous and expressive with good projection.
