A violin byAlessandro GaglianoNaples, c. 1706Alessandro Gagliano was the founder of the prolific dynasty that extended to 1930. His training is not truly established although his varnish is of an excellent quality reminiscent of the Venetians or Cremonese. The maker was influenced by the Amatis. The two-piece spruce top has a wide grain. The gorgeous maple back has a strong, medium-width curl descending. The sound of this violin is of good volume and lovely quality and has much in common with the Amati violins.
