A violin by

G.B. Guadagnini

Milan, 1750

Most players consider Guadagnini the preeminent maker of soloistic violins after those of Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù. Guadagnini's varnish from Milan is the most beautiful. The two-piece spruce top shows medium grain. The two-piece maple back has a handsome broad curl descending from the center joint. The varnish is of a fine red-orange color. Tonally, it has a rich, strong sound and great projection for a soloist.
