An exceptional violin by

Giovanni Battista Guadagnini

Milan, 1752

Guadagnini was the premier Italian maker in the mid-eighteenth century. Most players consider him the preeminent maker of soloistic violins after those of Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù. Working after the historic Cremonese epoch, Guadagnini was able to incorporate the uniqueness and passion of the earlier masters into his work. Violins from this period are regarded as among the maker's finest and are extraordinarily beautiful in appearance. This instrument is one of the most exceptional from Guadagnini's Milan period that we have seen. The handsome two-piece back is made from quarter-cut maple of medium curl ascending slightly from the center. The varnish is a gorgeous golden brown-orange color. This violin is an outstanding choice for a collector, soloist, concertmaster, or chamber musician.
